Best Anime of 2026: May Edition tier list

Five months into 2026 and it's already shaping up to be one of the best years for anime in recent memory. Winter gave us powerhouse sequels, Spring is delivering new hits, and Summer's lineup looks absolutely stacked.

Below is our tier list split into two sections: The Collection (anime that aired Jan–Apr that we can rank based on quality) and The To-Do (upcoming May–Dec releases ranked by anticipation).

May 2026 Anime Collection

What are the best anime that have released from Jan–Apr?

S Tier

Witch Hat Atelier

Spring 2026FantasyBug Films

The most anticipated anime of the year delivered beyond expectations. The magic system is mesmerizing, the art direction is studio Ghibli-level gorgeous, and Coco's journey from ordinary girl to aspiring witch is genuinely compelling. An instant classic.

Oshi no Ko Season 3

Winter 2026Drama/ThrillerDoga Kobo

The dark entertainment industry drama hits different in its third season. The plot threads are converging, the mystery is getting resolved, and the emotional weight is heavier than ever. Anime of the Season for Winter.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 2

Winter 2026Fantasy/AdventureMadhouse

More of what made Season 1 special — quiet, contemplative storytelling wrapped in beautiful fantasy. Frieren continues to redefine what "slow" anime can be. Every episode feels like a warm blanket.

A Tier

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 (The Culling Game)

Winter 2026Action/SupernaturalMAPPA

MAPPA answered the critics. The Culling Game arc is delivering consistently excellent fights with real stakes. The animation quality is back to Shibuya-arc levels, and the pacing is much better than late Season 2.

Re:ZERO Season 4

Spring 2026Isekai/PsychologicalWhite Fox

The stakes have never been higher for Subaru. After that Season 3 finale, this season wastes no time — it's darker, more complex, and the character work is top-tier. Not for casual viewers, but incredible for invested fans.

Dr. Stone Final Season

Spring 2026Sci-Fi/AdventureTMS Entertainment

Senku's moonshot is really happening. The final arc combines everything that makes Dr. Stone great — inventive problem-solving, hype teamwork, and surprisingly emotional payoffs. A strong send-off for the series.

Daemons of the Shadow Realm

Spring 2026Dark FantasyOLM

From the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist. The debut episodes immediately showed why Hiromu Arakawa is a generational mangaka. World-building, character design, and that signature blend of dark themes with heart.

B Tier

Hell's Paradise Season 2

Winter 2026Action/HorrorMAPPA

A significant step up from Season 1. The island's secrets unfold at a great pace, the action is brutal and fluid, and the character dynamics between Gabimaru and Sagiri have deepened considerably.

Dorohedoro (2026)

Spring 2026Dark Fantasy/ComedyMAPPA

The chaotic, grimy world of the Hole is back. The new episodes lean even harder into the bizarre humor while advancing the overarching plot. Not for everyone, but absolutely for its audience.

Journal with Witch

Winter 2026Slice of Life/Drama

The dark horse of Winter 2026. A quiet story about grief, family, and healing — revolving around a teen living with her eccentric aunt after losing her parents. Subtle, beautiful, and deeply affecting.

Wistoria: Wand and Sword

Spring 2026Fantasy/Action

A pleasant surprise. Blends swordplay with a magic academy setting in a way that feels fresh. The underdog protagonist earns his wins, and the fight choreography has been consistently impressive.

C Tier

Needy Girl Overdose

Spring 2026Psychological/Dark Comedy

Slow start, but the later episodes hit hard. The internet-age commentary is biting and the visual style is unique. It won't be for everyone — deliberately uncomfortable at times — but it's doing something interesting.

May 2026 Anime To-Do

What are the best anime that will come out May–Dec?

S Tier

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity

Summer 2026Action/ShonenPierrot

The final arc of Bleach. The animation quality from previous TYBW seasons has been movie-tier, and this finale promises the biggest battles in the series' history. The community hype is at maximum.

Mushoku Tensei Season 3

Summer 2026Isekai/FantasyStudio Bind

"Turning Point 4" — if you know, you know. Light novel readers have been waiting years for this arc to be animated. It's expected to be the most impactful story shift in the entire series.

A Tier

Ghost in the Shell (2026 Remake)

Summer 2026Sci-Fi/Cyberpunk

A faithful manga adaptation — finally. Not a sequel, not a reimagining, but the original Masamune Shirow story animated properly for the first time. The trailers look incredible.

Grand Blue Dreaming Season 3

Summer 2026Comedy

The funniest anime comedy returns. If you've seen the previous seasons, you already know — if you haven't, start from Season 1 immediately. Pure chaotic drinking humor.

B Tier

Nanoha (2026 TV Return)

Summer 2026Magical Girl/Action

The iconic 2000s magical girl franchise returns to TV after over a decade off-air. Nostalgia factor is high, and the franchise has a loyal fanbase ready for this.

Tomb Raider King

Summer 2026Action/Fantasy

A major webtoon adaptation. The premise — relics from tombs grant supernatural powers — has huge action potential. How well it adapts from manhwa to anime will determine if it breaks out.

How We Rank

Ranking the Collection

Anime that have aired Jan–Apr are ranked on animation quality, storytelling pacing, character work, and community reception (MAL, AniDB, social discussion). Personal enjoyment is the tiebreaker for tier placement, but consensus drives the floor.

Ranking the To-Do

Upcoming May–Dec anime are ranked on anticipation factors: studio pedigree, source-material strength (manga/light novel reception), trailer quality, and the specific arc being adapted.

S Tier = masterpiece-level, must-watch regardless of genre preferences
A Tier = excellent, highly recommended for fans of the genre
B Tier = good, worth watching if the premise interests you
C Tier = decent, has notable strengths but also clear weaknesses

What Changed from Last Month

This is the first edition! Check back in June for updates. Shows that improve or decline will move tiers, and new Spring premieres will be added as they air enough episodes to judge.
